When under the control of one identity, a person is usually unable to remember some of the events that occurred while other personalities were in control. The different identities, referred to as alters, may exhibit differences in speech, mannerisms, attitudes, thoughts and gender orientation.

Each of your alters will be represented by a circle with their name in the middle. The host's circle should be in the middle of the sheet. The size of the circles should represent how often they occupy the host (not their general influence or importance). Thus the host's circle should always be the largest.

In DID, alters are created unconsciously as a way for the brain to cope with trauma. Typically, it has characteristics deemed desirable to keep one safe. Each alter holds a different memory, role and meaning within the system. These alters can have different ages, gender, names and perceived appearance.

Characteristics of Alters different ages, for instance much younger or older; a different gender to the physical body; different names, or no name; different roles or functions, either related to daily life or to trauma; different attitudes, and preferences, e.g, in food, or dress.

People with DID may be aware of their Alters and be able to co-exist in harmony, while others may not. "I have mild awareness of some Voices, like shadows I notice from time to time. Others I have complete awareness of both their sound and what I believe they look like.

A: Some people discover their alters' names by asking them directly or waiting for the alters to introduce themselves. Others might choose names based on the alter's role, personality, or interests.

The ?core? identity is the person's usual personality. ?Alters? are the person's alternate personalities. Some people with DID have up to 100 alters. Alters tend to be very different from one another. The identities might have different genders, ethnicities, interests and ways of interacting with their environments.
