A stock certificate proves that the holder has an ownership. A membership certificate proves ownership of a limited liability company. Partnership certificates are issued to owners of limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships.

Companies issue stock certificates to their shareholders as proof of stock ownership. It is a legal document certifying the rights of a shareholder over company stocks.

Your certificate will also be signed by an officer of the company. Be aware, though, that this request usually comes with a fee. Some brokers can charge as much as $500 for producing a piece of paper that certifies ownership of a number of shares.
