DEFINITION OF TRUANCY AND EXCESSIVE ABSENCES The new definition is: a. Absent 30 or more consecutive hours without a legitimate excuse; b. Absent 42 or more hours in one school month without a legitimate excuse; or c. Absent 72 or more hours in one school year without a legitimate excuse.

When your child repeatedly is absent from school, or truant, your child may face proceedings and penalties in a juvenile court. Additionally, you may face criminal charges in an adult court. If you're convicted, the possible consequences may include: A jail sentence.

If such a resolution is passed, the parents of a student who is absent without legitimate excuse for more than 10 consecutive school days or a total of 15 school days, will be given written notice. The parents and the student may then choose to appear before the superintendent and challenge this information.

Additionally, a student will continue to be considered habitually truant when the student's unexcused absences exceed 30 consecutive school hours, 42 hours in one school month, or 72 hours in one school year.
