For Resident and Non-Resident Firearms License new and renewal applications: You can now apply Online via the MIRCS Firearms Licensing Portal. If you apply online, contact your licensing authority to arrange payment.
A License to carry Firearms (LTC) or Firearm identification (FID) Card shall be valid, unless revoked or suspended, for a period of not more than six (6) years from the date of issue.
The LTC allows the holder to possess and carry rifles, shotguns, and handguns. The FID allows you to possess non-largecapacity rifles, shotguns, and chemical sprays. Weapons that exceed these limits require an LTC or above to possess. The FID – Restricted is for individuals to possess mace and pepper spray only.
Please be aware that once your LTC/FID expires it is expired, there is no longer a grace period. If you renew your license prior to the expiration date, then the permit becomes indefinite until you receive your new permit.
You can renew your license up to 2 years after expiration.
If your firearms license is due to expire in less than 5 months, we recommend that you please contact the Records Department to schedule an appointment. Please keep in mind that Massachusetts no longer has a grace period for expired firearms licenses.
Ages 15, 16 or 17 you must submit with your application a certificate from your parent or guardian granting permission for the card. 5. How long is a LTC or FID Card good for? Six years.
License Validity: Upon approval, your Massachusetts firearms license will be valid for six (6) years, granting you the privilege and responsibility of firearm ownership.
