You can request for a roommate on your housing application. Both students will need to request each other as roommates to be considered. If you do not request a specific roommate, one will be assigned to you based on your building and floor plan preferences, as well as the questionnaire component of your application.
Private – you may be able to choose your own housemates in private accommodation, e.g. if a few of your friends are going to the same uni. A lot of students go into private accommodation in their second year, when they can choose to live with people they've met during their first year.
