The word count will include everything in the body of the text, such as quotations, citations, footnotes and headings. It does not include bibliography, references, appendices or other supplementary material, which does not form an essential part of the text.
When you fail a module, most universities provide an opportunity to resit the exam or redo the assignment. University can be stressful and failing an exam can happen to all of us so don't panic, being able to resit your exams is used for exactly this. But how do you resit a module?
We will only consider resits if there are significant mitigating circumstances affecting your first 'sitting'. In these situations we still cannot guarantee that your application will be considered, but you should submit a Mitigating Circumstances form so that this can be considered alongside your application.
Within a year students may carry failed modules from one semester to the next but not from one academic year to another; that is, they will not be able to rise to the next year of their programme until they have successfully completed the preceding year(s).
If you are using APA, the in-text references are included in your word count. If you are using Chicago, footnotes are not included in the word count.
Some of your modules may allow for condonement (also known as a condoned fail). This means you might be awarded a qualification even if you have a small amount of failure, as long as your overall performance is of a good standard. You will not need to be reassessed if you meet the condonement criteria.
Assessed work (including dissertations) should not exceed the prescribed word count. References and footnotes in the main body of the essay (or which need to be read to understand the content) count towards the word limit; the bibliography and title / question do not.
Of 3 marks at each 5% increase in word count. Work less than 5% over the word limit will not be penalised.
Word count limits as stated in the models below would normally include footnotes, endnotes, abstracts, figures and tables.
Tables, diagrams (including associated legends), appendices, references, footnotes and endnotes, the bibliography and any bound published material are excluded from the word count.
