FAQ

Rules. Winston Draft is primarily a two-player format and is best with two players but can be played by up to four. Each player must bring three boosters (or 45 cards per player).

Gameplay follows standard draft rules: Players sit around a table in a semi-circle. Each player then opens a booster pack and picks a single card without showing the other players. Each player then passes the remaining cards to the left, and continues drafting from the new cards they get from the player on their right.

The ratio for each slot is roughly for an uncommon, for a rare. Ice Age booster packs contain fifteen cards: Eleven commons, three uncommons, and one rare.

3 Booster packs per player from the current draft format.

Booster Drafts are played 1v1, the recommended number of players is 8. Each player receives 4 Altered booster packs. Players each open their first booster pack, and remove the /foiler card. Each player secretly selects 1 card from the pack, then passes the remaining contents to the person to their left.

There are two likely reasons why beginners put more bad cards in their decks. One is evaluation issues. The other is draft navigation problems. You can imagine a player not being able to find a good draft lane and because of that being forced to pick and play weaker cards.

For 2 players, I prefer a tower draft. Shuffle 92 cards into a pile, then take turns flipping over the top 4 cards. Player 1 takes a card, player 2 takes 2 cards, the player 1 takes the last card. Take turns going first.

The cards are placed face up, so that the piles contents are known. The first player must choose and take a pile. Then one card from the stack is added to each pile, meaning the chosen pile is now one card while all other piles are two cards. Players take turns taking piles in this manner until the stack is used up.

To have a Booster Draft, you need three things: 3 Booster packs per player from the current draft format. 8 total players (It's possible to draft with fewer than 8, but 8 is the number needed for sanctioned Magic drafts) A healthy supply of basic lands.

Sealed Deck is one of the two common Limited formats (along with Booster Draft, which will be covered in a future article). You open six booster packs, add as many basic lands as you like, and build a 40-card deck out of it—simple as that!
