To protect children against serious infections, California school immunization law requires them to receive immunizations before entry to pre-kindergarten (child care or preschool) and TK-12 schools.
California removed its personal and religious exemption option in 2015. Parent/guradian must complete an online educational module to receive a non-medical exemption. Connecticut removed its religious exemption option in 2021.
If your child has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving vaccines, your child will need an exemption to attend school or childcare. To obtain an exemption, you can begin the process by registering for a CAIR-ME account. The site will walk you through the quick and easy process.
The physician can register for an account in CAIR-ME and log in to issue the medical exemption​. Once the medical exemption is issued, the physician prints the form and provides a copy to the parents to give to their child's school or child care facility.
Every state has laws that require children to get certain vaccines before they can go to school or daycare. Yet parents may be able to opt out of one or more vaccines for medical, religious, or personal reasons.
Students Admitted at TK/K-12 Need: Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP, DTP, Tdap, or Td) — 5 doses. (4 doses OK if one was given on or after 4th birthday. Polio (OPV or IPV) — 4 doses. Hepatitis B — 3 doses. Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) — 2 doses. Varicella (Chickenpox) — 2 doses.
Effective January 1, 2016: Parents or guardians of students in any school or child-care facility, whether public or private, will no longer be allowed to submit a personal beliefs exemption to a currently-required vaccine.
