First-time Homestead Exemption applicants and persons applying for the Homestead Assessment Difference (Portability) can file online.

In Maryland, the homestead exemption applies to real property, including your home, condominium, or co-op. You must own and occupy the property in order to protect it. The homestead exemption also applies to a manufactured home you have converted to real property by permanently affixing it to the land.

In addition to the proof of Florida residency, you must be residing on the property as your primary residence as of January 1st. Social Security numbers are required for all owners and their spouses making application, even if the spouse does not own and/or reside on the property, per Florida Statute.

Homestead Tax Credit Requirements While every county has its own cap, the highest increase can be no more than 10%. State Property Tax Exemption- Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses. Armed Services veterans with a permanent and total service connected disability rated 100% by the Veterans Administration may receive an exemption from real property taxes on the dwelling house and surrounding yard.

To get a homestead deduction on your Florida taxes, you have to fill out an application form, the DR-501, and demonstrate proof of residence by March 1 of the year for which you wish to qualify.

You and your spouse may claim an additional $1,000 exemption on the Maryland return for being 65 years of age or older or blind. If any other dependent claimed is 65 or over, you also receive an extra exemption of up to $3,200.
