FAQ

The presenter should relax, speak clearly, start with the introduction, move through the methods, results and end with the discussion section. The presenter should engage in conservation with the audience and answer their questions during the poster presentation.

The introduction should give a brief background of the topic you are discussing/presenting in your poster. The reader needs to very quickly understand why you chose this general topic (why is it important?) and get general background information (bulleted list or maximum length of approximately 200 words).

Stand on one side of the poster and avoid blocking the audience from viewing your poster or the poster next to yours. Smile and make eye contact with the audience. Shake their hands and introduce yourself. Ask your audience if they would like you to present your poster to them.

Presenting Your Poster Prepare an "elevator pitch" of your poster: less than five sentences, it should address 1) Your research topic, 2) Your findings, and 3) Their significance. Prepare "tours" of your poster of varying lengths (e.g. 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.)

Poster references need not be as extensive as those in papers. If your poster work, or work closely related to it, has already been published, by all means display the citation(s). Footnotes are permissible, but keep them brief and avoid them entirely if at all possible.

In the acknowledgements section, you should list the names of people who helped with the project. Resist the temptation to use a person's title (e.g. Dr. or Professor) just use their name, and if a person is an author, you don't have to thank them in this section, their name on the author line is recognition enough.

Background or Introduction: Present any background information necessary for the reader to understand your poster. Start with a general introduction to the field. Be brief, but include the important points to be sure the reader sees the relevance of your work. Bullet points are best, versus big paragraphs of text.
