An exemption or deferral enacted pursuant to § 58.1-3210 or 58.1-3211.1 may be granted for any year following the date that the qualifying individual occupying such dwelling and owning title or partial title thereto reaches the age of 65 years or for any year following the date the disability occurred.

General Information. Personal property tax relief is provided for any passenger car, motorcycle, or pickup or panel truck having a registered gross weight with DMV of 10,000 pounds or less on January 1. Qualifying vehicles must be owned or leased by an individual and be used 50% or less for business purposes.

Qualify for Personal Property Tax Relief Per the Code of Virginia §58.1-3524, personal property tax relief (PPTR) gives tax relief on the taxes due for the first $20,000 in assessed value on qualified personal vehicles. No relief is given on any assessment amounts over $20,000.

Property considered for exemption from real estate taxation must qualify by general classification. The appropriate Application for Exemption must be completed and filed with the City Assessor no later than July 1st prior to the calendar year in which the exemption is requested.

Applications are available at the county real estate assessments office or local office of the commissioner of revenue. Supporting documentation for income, assets, and liabilities may be required. A copy of federal income tax return and supporting schedules must be included.
