It's important to know that in the eyes of the law, all property is either "exempt" or "nonexempt," but only nonexempt property can be subjected to a child support lien. With such a broad categorization, everyone from contractors to architects has the ability to file a mechanic's lien if their work or materials go unpaid. Additionally, in Texas, there is no legal distinction between a contractor and a subcontractor when it comes to legal authority to file a lien.
Do judgments expire in Texas? Judgments awarded in Texas to a non-government creditor are generally valid for ten years but can be renewed for longer. If a judgment is not renewed, it will become dormant. A creditor can request to revive a dormant judgment to continue to try and collect the debt.
Generally, to file a judgment lien, an abstract of judgment must be issued by the justice court. Some justice courts have a form available on their website to request an abstract of judgment.
