Religious liberty is enshrined in the text of our Constitution and in numerous federal statutes. It encompasses the right of all Americans to exercise their religion freely, without being coerced to join an established church or to satisfy a religious test as a qualification for public office.

“Religious liberty” is the freedom to believe and exercise or act upon religious conscience without unnecessary interference by the government. Just as religious liberty involves the freedom to practice religion, it also means freedom not to practice religion.

Giving religious liberty, therefore, keeps us focused on the battles that actually matter: “For although we live in the flesh, we do not wage war ing to the flesh, since the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh” (2 Cor. -4a).
