(a) Mandatory Retirement for Age . —Unless retired or separated earlier, each regular commissioned officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps covered by subsection (b) shall be retired on the first day of the month following the month in which the officer becomes 64 years of age.

Soldiers having 19 years or more of active federal service (AFS) when notified of permanent change of station (PCS) may request a retirement date. If the Soldier elects to retire, the retirement application (DA Form 2339) must be submitted and approved within 30 days of receipt of official alert notification of PCS.
