Your driving record is forever, and there are ways that it can seep into your personal life. Traffic violations, accidents, DUI convictions, and license suspensions are all kept track of on your driving record.
Once you believe you are eligible to have your license and registration reinstated, you can create a case account and securely upload documents to the MVA's website. You can also call or visit the MVA's Driver Wellness and Safety Division (DW&S) and request a license reinstatement.
Maryland law requires you to return your license plates to the MVA when they are no longer needed. We do NOT offer appointments for tag returns, simply stop by a location near you during normal business hours or visit at 24-hour tag return box.
At a minimum the suspension period will last 6 months, while the revocation period depends upon your driving record. Note, however, that the required, minimum suspension/revocation period cannot begin until your license is received.
If you have been caught driving an unregistered car in Maryland, you may be charged with a criminal misdemeanor and face legal repercussions like costly fines or license suspension. To avoid these penalties, contact a trusted registration attorney who may be able to help with your defense.
If you cancel your insurance while still in possession of your tags, you may be fined by the MVA $200 for the first 30 days, $7 a day (per vehicle) thereafter until you either reinstate your insurance or turn in the tags.
Drop your tags in any of our 24/7 tag return drop boxes across Maryland. To expedite your transaction, download the license plate return form, print, and complete the form prior to returning your tags to a drop box. Forms are also available at the drop box.
