Warner Bros. A project that has long been in development with Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese still has some life in it. DiCaprio optioned the film rights to the book, The Devil in the White City, back in 2010, and it was in various forms of development even before the actor got his hands on it.
Erik Larson's 2003 New York Times bestseller tells the parallel true stories of architect Daniel Burnham, who was instrumental to the building of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and depraved serial killer H.H. Holmes.
The problem is that key scenes in the book, as well as other descriptions, characterizations and details, aren't based on historical sources or eyewitness accounts, but on Larson's speculations, on what he seems to believe must have happened or could have happened. Yet he presents them as fact.
In a review for Newsweek, Malcolm Jones wrote "only in the notes at the back of the book does Larson admit that the chapters describing Holmes's murders are merely conjecture built on a handful of facts"; even so, the story of the fair was "too enchanting" so even that "grave misstep can't doom" the book.
DiCaprio purchased the film rights in 2010, with the film stuck in development ever since. While The Devil in the White City went to Hulu as a show, the streamer dropped the project in March 2023.
The Devil in the White City is a book by Erik Larson that takes a close look at The World's Columbian Exposition, the world's fair that Chicago hosted in 1893, held in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. The fair was tainted by deaths, a serial killer, and an assassination.
Erik Larson's central point in The Devil in the White City is to illustrate that appearances do not depict reality. He juxtaposes the glamor of the White City of the World's Fair with the Black City of crime and murder in Chicago.
In 2019, Hulu announced that it was developing the project as a big-budget series with DiCaprio and Scorsese exec producing. Last year, Hulu decided not to proceed with the project.
But the series won't debut on Netflix, or even HBO, which has also leaned into some impressive feats of casting on series including Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects. Instead, The Devil in the White City will live on Hulu—making it the streamer's most impressive get since The Handmaid's Tale.
The Devil in the White City project is still in progress despite numerous delays and changes in casting and production partners.
