A temporary restraining order is a short-term measure in effect until the court is able to issue something more enduring, such as a preliminary injunction. For example, a temporary restraining order can be issued without notice by a federal court, but cannot exceed ten days without additional court proceedings.

There are two types of injunctions – an ex parte temporary injunction and a final injunction issued after notice to the respondent and a hearing. How long an injunction lasts is really up to the judge. An injunction can last any amount of time. A temporary injunction can last as long as it takes to get the other party served. Until the final hearing, the temporary injunction will be in force.
