FAQ

The F-1 Visa (Academic Student) allows you to enter the United States as a full-time student at an accredited college, university, seminary, conservatory, academic high school, elementary school, or other academic institution or in a language training program.

Optional practical training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student's major area of study.

Keep your Immigration Documents Safe and Valid. Keep Your Local Address and Contact Information Up To Date. Work At Least 20 Hours Per Week in Degree Related Employment. Follow Volunteer Rules. Limit Any Study to Part Time. Do Not Exceed 90 Days of Unemployment. Report Changes in OPT Employment.

Traveling while on OPT or OPT STEM Extension In general, an F-1 student on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT may travel outside the United States temporarily and be readmitted to resume F-1 status and employment for the remainder of the period authorized on his or her EAD card.

You are still considered to be in F-1 student status while on OPT and will continue to use your F-1 visa stamp for any travel during your OPT period. To maintain status on OPT, you must either work at job(s) directly related to your major/level of study or actively seek employment in your major/level of study.

OPT is part of F-1 status. Though you may no longer be a student, you are still in F-1 status. A 24-month extension of OPT is only possible for students who are completing a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in DHS-designated STEM (Science, Ttechnology, Eengineering, and Mathematics) fields.

Unpaid Employment While on OPT Students on 12 month OPT may undertake unpaid employment, as long as the work 1) relates to the student's field of study and 2) does not violate any U.S. Department of Labor laws.

Eligibility for a STEM extension of OPT The new regulation will broaden the eligibility criteria for a STEM extension of OPT and lengthen the duration of STEM employment authorization, as follows: A more extensive list of U.S. STEM and related degrees will qualify F-1 students for an OPT extension.

You may lose your immigration status, become ineligible to change your status to other employment-based immigration categories, such as H-1B status, or be denied visa applications in the future for failing to abide by the OPT rule 90 days.

You are required to report new employment or changes to employment within 10 days in your SEVP Portal of the change to maintain F-1 status reporting requirements. Below you will find and what items are required to update employment during your OPT period.
