ONE IS NOT QUALIFIED TO SERVE AS A JUROR IF: If you have served on jury duty within the past 4 years. If you have been convicted of a felony. If you are under the age of 18 years.
An individual can request an exemption or postponement from their jury duty in New York, provided they have a legitimate reason for being unable to serve. As such, they should contact the court promptly to explain their situation, submit necessary documents, and follow through the required procedures.
All Others: If you feel that it is impossible for you to serve as a juror and wish to be excused from service, you must submit documentary proof of the reason why. Please call our information line at 1-800-449-2819 to receive information about the proof you must provide.
JURY Is there a dress code for jurors? Proper court attire is mandatory. No jeans, shorts, tank tops, sweats or other very casual attire is permitted. Dress "business casual" or "business" for your appearance.
If you do not receive notice that you are exempt, you must attend jury selection on the date and time indicated on your summons. If you are granted an exemption, you are not required to serve as a juror and do not need to attend jury selection.
Reasons for Being Excused from Jury Service Medical reasons. Public necessity. Undue hardship. Dependent care. Student Status. Military conflict. Other reason deemed sufficient by the court.
For example, write something like “My name is Jane Doe. On (date), I received a jury summons for (court date) at (court address) and was assigned the juror number (insert number here). I am writing to request to be excused from jury service because being absent from work would pose an extreme financial hardship.”
