An individual can request an exemption or postponement from their jury duty in New York, provided they have a legitimate reason for being unable to serve. As such, they should contact the court promptly to explain their situation, submit necessary documents, and follow through the required procedures.
If you cannot serve even if granted a postponement, you may contact your local commissioner of jurors office and ask to be excused from service. The commissioner may ask you to provide documentary proof of the reasons why you need to be excused.

If the date your are summoned is inconvenient, the law allows you one postponement to an available jury term date of your choice within six months. Requests to be postponed must be made as soon as possible to the Jury Commissioner's office at 607-216-6622.
Absent extraordinary circumstances, the commissioner shall not grant a prospective juror more than three postponements of jury service, nor shall the aggregate period of postponements granted to a prospective juror exceed 18 months.
