The British Columbia Supreme Court has approved a $51-million settlement agreement in the class action lawsuit Douez v Facebook, Inc., 2022 BCSC 914. The lawsuit arose from allegations that Facebook violated provincial privacy statutes through its “Sponsored Stories” advertising program.
What is this lawsuit about? The plaintiff has alleged that the defendant, Facebook, Inc. used class members' names and portraits in Sponsored Stories advertisements without their consent, in violation of the Privacy Acts of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
It turns out the payment is tied to a recently settled class action lawsuit against Facebook. The class accused Facebook's parent company, Meta, of using users' images without their consent for “Sponsored Stories” to feature or advertise products.
How do I make a claim? You can submit a claim at mnp.ca/facebooksettlement. The form will ask you to provide your name, contact information, Facebook user name, approximate date you signed up on the social-media platform, and the email address associated with your account.
