1. The marriage license can be obtained on the same day as your scheduled ceremony. If you wish to obtain your marriage license before your ceremony, please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. You may also complete the marriage license application before your ceremony date by clicking here.
Identification is required, either a driver's license or a certified copy of a birth certificate. No blood test or waiting period is required. Those 16 and 17 must have parental consent. South Dakota law does not permit the marriage of those under 16.
Processing time may take several days. Please expect to receive your copies via regular mail in approximately two weeks. If you wish to expedite your request, you may opt to send it via overnight mail.
After your ceremony, your officiant is legally required to file your license within 10 days. Generally, couples are permitted to submit requests for certified copies beginning 7 days after the wedding date.
It may take up to 10 business days from the time we receive the marriage license for it to be registered and a marriage certificate to be available.
Before performing the wedding ceremony, the person solemnizing a marriage shall ascertain, by personal knowledge or by requesting a photographic identification: The identity of the parties. Their real and full names and places of residence; and. The names and places of residence of the two witnesses.
Marriage license must be purchased BEFORE ceremony is performed. Photo ID Required Examples: Driver's License, State ID, Military ID, Tribal Photo ID, etc. Minimum Age: 16 with parental consent and birth certificate.
