The New Jersey Certification of Retirement — Legal Services Volunteer is a program that allows retired attorneys to provide pro bono legal services to low-income residents of the state. The program is administered by the New Jersey State Bar Association and is designed to ensure that all New Jersey citizens have access to quality legal representation. Through the program, retired attorneys can volunteer their time and expertise to assist residents in need. There are two types of New Jersey Certification of Retirement — Legal Services Volunteers: Certified and Non-Certified. A Certified Volunteer is an attorney who has already been admitted to the New Jersey Bar and has completed the required training and testing to be certified as a volunteer for the program. A Non-Certified Volunteer is an attorney who has not yet been admitted to the New Jersey Bar but who is interested in providing pro bono legal services. Both types of volunteers must meet certain eligibility requirements and complete a training program in order to become registered and certified. The program also requires volunteers to agree to provide legal services without charge to low-income New Jersey residents in need of assistance. Once approved, volunteers are able to provide legal advice, referrals, and representation in a variety of areas, including consumer protection, family law, housing, and employment.
