California Emergency Protective Order (CLETS-EPO) is a restraining order issued by a court in the state of California. It is designed to protect victims of domestic violence, elder or dependent adult abuse, stalking, human trafficking, or harassment from further harm. A CLETS-EPO is a temporary restraining order that can be issued without notice to the person committing the abuse. It can be issued for up to 7 days and can be extended for up to 5 years. There are two types of California Emergency Protective Orders: Domestic Violence Restraining Order and Workplace Violence Restraining Order. A Domestic Violence Restraining Order is designed to protect victims of domestic violence (including but not limited to spouses, former spouses, cohabitants, former cohabitants, or persons who have had a child together) from further abuse. It can include orders staying away from the victim, not to harass or threaten the victim, to relinquish firearms, and to attend domestic violence counseling. A Workplace Violence Restraining Order is designed to protect employees of a particular employer from an individual who has threatened or committed violence in the workplace. It can include orders staying away from the workplace and the employee, not to threaten or harass the employee, and to attend counseling.
