Alaska Jury Duty

In Alaska, jurors receive nominal compensation for each day spent at jury selection, or while serving on a jury. Jurors can also qualify to receive mileage reimbursement for travel related to their jury duty service.If impractical to return home each evening, jurors receive the same per diem as state employees would.

A lay person may claim exemption from service as a juror they show that their health, or the health or proper care of their family; or a permanent physical or mental disability, or other substantial hardship is expected to last more than 2 years and makes it necessary for the person to be excused.

The issuing court can send a missing juror a failure to appear notice. This notice demands the juror to appear in court. If no response is made to the notice, the court can impose a fine. It will also issue an order to show cause.

You can be fined for not turning up for jury service. If you think you're going to be late or you're sick and can't go, you must contact the juries officer before 9.30 am that day.

Are courthouses open? The courts are operating but the processes have been changed so you can take care of your court business by phone, emaill, or online. Some courts require an appointment for customer service.

While there are a number of ways to be legally excused from jury duty in Alaska, failing to appear when summoned for jury selection or jury duty without an excuse is illegal, and can result in legal repercussions. Failure to respond to a summons may result in contempt of court.
