Alcohol server training isn't required by state law. However, many employers in Pennsylvania require it because it reduces their liability in the event that an employee makes a mistake. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) oversees a program known as the Responsible Alcohol Management Program (RAMP).

If you're looking to sell or serve drinks in Pennsylvania, here's the deal: You need to complete Responsible Alcohol Management Program (RAMP) server/seller training within six months of starting the job. This rule applies to everyone who checks IDs, including bartenders, waiters, bouncers, and more.

In Pennsylvania, liquor licenses are issued by the state. You must have a seller's permit already to be able to apply for a liquor license. After you've applied for a liquor license, you must post a public notice of application on your business's premises for 30 days.

Server/Seller Training In order to fulfill this requirement, at least 50 percent of the licensee's alcohol service staff – including anyone who serves or sells alcohol and/or checks IDs, as well as owners or managers who perform these duties – must complete this training before RAMP certification can be granted.

(TOPIC): WHAT IS RAMP CERTIFICATION? Legislation enacted on June 18, 2001, established the Responsible Alcohol Management Program, which is a voluntary certification that provides incentives for licensees who participate and complete five components.

When ramps are required they shall conform to the following specifications: (1) Each ramp shall have a slope no greater than 1 foot rise in 12 feet of run or 8.33% grade or 4 degrees and 50 minutes deflection. (2) Each ramp shall have a handrail on at least one side or preferably on both sides.

Any person who sells or serves alcoholic beverages in the state of Pennsylvania MUST take and pass the Pennsylvania RAMP seller/server class in order to comply with this law. The program will also help protect workers and their employer from potential legal incidents. The certification must be renewed every two years.

Most Calendar Year Licensees renew or validate annually, however, some renew every four years.
