The test is "negative" if there is no bump (or only a very small bump) at the spot where the fluid was injected. A negative TB skin test usually means that you don't have TB. In some situations, you may need to have another TB skin test later.

The skin test is comparative as the animal's immune response to injections of both bovine and avian (bird) tuberculin is measured and compared. By simultaneously injecting two types of tuberculin into the deep layers of the skin of the neck, the test can better distinguish between animals infected with M.

The first test to detect possible carriers of bovine tuberculosis is the Caudal Fold Tuberculin (CFT) test, in which a small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin is injected into the fold of skin at the base of the tail. The CFT is read 72 +/- 6 hours later. If negative, no further action is required.

Under the new regulations, cows of all ages, and males over the age of 36 months that are moving from farm to farm or through a mart must have been TB tested in the last six months, or be tested within 30 days after the movement.

There are two kinds of tests used to detect TB bacteria in the body: the TB skin test (TST) and TB blood tests. A positive TB skin test or TB blood test only tells that a person has been infected with TB bacteria.

In most situations, called “standard interpretation”, if there is an increased skin thickness where the bovine tuberculin was injected and this is over 4 mm greater than the increase in the skin thickness where the avian tuberculin was injected, the animal is identified as being infected with bTB.

The TB skin test is the common name for the Single Intradermal Comparative Cervical Tuberculin (SICCT) test. This skin test is regarded as the definitive indicator of infection by the bacterium that causes TB in cattle - Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis).

The comparative intradermal tuberculin (CIDT) test involves the intradermal injection of tuberculins, purified protein derivatives (PPDs) from Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium, and the subsequent detection of swelling and indurations at the injection site 72 h later.
