Results and TSSEC Students that qualify for Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest will receive a rating of 1C (certified). Students that receive a first division but do not qualify will receive a rating of I (one).

To receive a rating, you must have an ORIGINAL part for the adjudicator, not a copy. For solos, it is best to provide just the solo part. For ensembles, you must provide a score. A "score" is defined as a vertically aligned set of all parts being played in the ensemble, where all parts can be read simultaneously.

The highest rating a band can receive is "superior" or "1" by scoring between 90-100. The bands perform three prepared pieces and are scored by three judges. They are also given one piece to sight read, in which a sight reading judge gives his/her evaluation. The four scores are averaged to give an overall rating.

Students or groups that earn a rating of 1 (or "Superior") are qualified for State Solo & Ensemble Festival which is held in March. The basic structure of State Solo & Ensemble Festival is the same as District, but the students are held to a higher standard.

When and where will the 2024 TSSEC be held? The contest will be held on Saturday, May 25 and Monday, May 27 at multiple sites in the Austin area. The music theory test will be given virtually by the sponsor during a window of several days in early May. More information will be distributed in late April.

The student introduces themself and their selection, then performs. The adjudicator will provide a written and verbal critique of the performance and award a rating based on defined criteria. ( Rating 1 = highest, rating 5 = lowest)

An individual is eligible to participate in UIL contests if that individual is a full-time student of the member school the student represents, has been in attendance and has passed the number of courses required by state law and by rules of the State Board of Education, and is passing the number of courses required by ...

SUPERIOR – The rating is comparable to the grade of “A”. This rating reflects the finest conceivable performance for the event and class of participants being evaluated – worthy of the distinction of being recognized as among the very best.

Solo and Ensemble is an opportunity for students to perform in front of a professional judge and receive feedback. A student is given a first, second, or third based on the quality of their performance but they do not compete against other students.

Results and TSSEC Students that qualify for Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest will receive a rating of 1C (certified). Students that receive a first division but do not qualify will receive a rating of I (one).
