The department works to ensure that families have access to high quality and affordable early childhood care and education and administers the licensing and regulation of child care centers. The Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board is administratively attached to the Department of Children and Families.

In Wisconsin, parents and caregivers have two options for regulated child care—licensed or certified. Licensed providers can care for four or more unrelated children under the age of 7. Certified providers are voluntarily regulated and can provide care for up to three unrelated children under the age of 7.

The child care licensing program is a component of the services provided by Department of Children and Families (DCF). The program is accountable for the statewide licensure of Wisconsin's child care facilities, including family child care, group child care, and day camps. A child welfare professional will write up your report. A supervisor will review the report and decide if the situation's seriousness is sufficient to merit assessment. If a decision is made to screen the case in, the supervisor will assign a time response based on the presenting information.
