The SDI is a set of measures to assess a student's self determination. It includes questions about choice making, goal setting, and decision making. The Inventory includes a self-report measure for people aged 13-22 with or without disabilities, as well as a parent or teacher report for an outside perspective.

Self determination is believing you can control your own destiny. Self-determination is a combination of attitudes and abilities that lead people to set goals for themselves, and to take the initiative to reach these goals.

Self-determination theory suggests that all humans have three basic psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—that underlie growth and development.

The Self-Determination Scale (SDS) was designed to assess individual differences in the extent to which people tend to function in a self-determined way.

Self-determined individuals learn to navigate their lives and make informed choices. Self-Determination assessments help students to identify their strengths and needs to enable them to set goals and advocate for themselves.

Exercising because you value the health benefits. Quitting smoking because you value living a longer life with your children. A child completing their chores because they understand the value of responsibility. Creating art for the inherent joy of it.

A self-determined person can answer these questions: How well can I initiate individual or group activities? What are my communication strengths and areas of need? How can I access resources to get things done? When I meet a roadblock to reaching a goal, what do I do?
