If you continue driving with expired tags for over 6 months, your vehicle can be impounded under California Vehicle Code § 22651(0)(1).

You can renew online at that time. However, there will be a $10 late fee applied to your registration if you renew more than five days after the expiration date. Late fees will be assessed on day 6.
