Answer: California does not require a taxidermist license, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service does require a license for migratory waterfowl. A Federal Taxidermy Permit is required to possess migratory birds for taxidermy purposes if you do not otherwise have authorization to possess.

(b)(1) Where a taxidermist has prepared, stuffed, or mounted the skin of any fish, reptile, amphibian, bird, or mammal for another person and that person does not pay the cost thereof, or take delivery thereof, the taxidermist may sell the skin only if the commission adopts regulations permitting the sale.

What is required to perform taxidermy? The Division of Wildlife does not currently have a "Taxidermy Permit." As a taxidermist, you can mount any animal that is legally taken or possessed. For example, you can mount legally harvested deer, turkey, furbearers, small game, and game birds.

Taxidermy is a way to preserve an animal for display or study. There are many different ways to do taxidermy, but they usually involve “mounting” an animal's skin on a body. The word taxidermy comes from the Greek words taxis (which means “arrangement”) and derma (which means “skin”).

Taxidermy is a perfectly legal and respected trade which is governed by strict regulations, covered by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

You will need to acquire a lot of artistic and technical skill – as a taxidermist you must know how to properly prepare an animal carcass, including tanning the skin, but you must also have an eye for anatomy and movement in order to make life-like mounts.

312 IAC 9-10-5 Taxidermist licenses (a) A license is required under this section for an individual who performs taxidermy services on a wild animal for another person. (b) An application for a taxidermist license shall be completed on a departmental form.
