To enter the field as a CNA, interested parties must first complete a Utah-approved training program. These programs are much quicker to complete than an associate's degree or bachelor's degree and are typically offered at area community colleges and vocational schools.

If you are currently a CNA in another state, you may submit a Reciprocity Application to receive certification in Utah. You must be current and active in that state for the Reciprocity Application to be approved.

****CNA certificates must be renewed every two years.

Nursing Assistant Certificates are valid for 2 years in the state of Utah. To be eligible for certification renewal, you must complete 200 hours of paid nursing services under the direction of a licensed nurse within the previous certification period.

Expired — The nurse aide's registration is expired. To renew registry status, the nurse aide must provide verification of qualifying employment. If the person is unable to verify employment, he or she will have to re-train and/or re-test.

If the certification expires, the individual must then reinstate their certification which requires more documentation than a renewal. Proof of eight hours worked each year is required for each year beginning the year prior to the expiration year and continuing through the current year.

Utah-approved CNA programs are 80 hours. They are offered at a variety of institutions including nursing homes and community colleges.
