You can choose to work more than 48 hours a week on average if you're over 18. This is called 'opting out'. Your employer can ask you to opt out, but you cannot be sacked or treated unfairly for refusing to do so.

An employee can choose to work more than an average of 48 hours a week. They do this by signing an 'opt-out agreement'. This is a written agreement and should be separate from the employment contract. The employee does not have to agree to opting out of the 48-hour weekly limit.

Although this is more common among part-time employees, it's also possible to work three days per week as a full-time employee. Full-time employees with this schedule can work 12 or 13 hours of workdays three times per week.
