A death benefit is a payout to the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, annuity, or pension when the insured or annuitant dies. For life insurance policies, death benefits are not subject to income tax and named beneficiaries ordinarily receive the death benefit as a lump-sum payment.

In order to opt out of this plan, you must meet all of the requirements outlined on the form, complete this form and return it to NYCERS within 180 days of becoming a Dispatcher Member. Note that this opt-out election is IRREVOCABLE.

Tiers 3 and 4 Under Tier 4, you would receive 1 ½% for each additional service year beyond 30. If you retire before age 62 with less than 30 years of service, the pension factor is reduced based on your age. If you are a Tier 3 member, you may retire under either Tier 3 or 4.

For the full retirement benefit, you must be 62 years old at retirement or, if you have 30 years of credited service, you may retire as early as age 55. With less than 30 years of service, you may retire as early as age 55, but you will receive a reduced benefit.

When he or she dies, the surviving designated beneficiary will be paid $12,867 per year (75% of $17,156). If the designated beneficiary predeceases the retiree, all payments would then end upon the death of the retiree. The retiree receives a reduced monthly lifetime benefit.
