How do you file an OPRA request? Go to the SDL | Portal. Take a few minutes to sign up and fill in your basic information which includes name, email, and town. Once logged in, go to “Permits” to view any open permits.

The Open Public Records Act (OPRA) is a State law to increase the public's accessibility to view and copy government records maintained by public agencies in the State. Additionally it provides the public a procedure to register a complaint when a request for access to government records is denied.

Under OPRA, the custodian must respond to request "as soon as possible," but requesters must receive a response within seven business days after the custodian receives a complete request. That does not mean that a record in storage, or one that is difficult to find, will be available during that time.

Within 45 days after the denial, you can file a lawsuit in NJ superior court. You pay a $250 filing fee, mailing & copying costs, and other applicable court fees.

Submit a written OPRA request, complete the Government Records Request Form and submit it by mailing the form to the appropriate division/department as directed on the second page of the form.

SECTION 1 – OPRA DEFINED What is the Open Public Records Act (OPRA)? OPRA is the State statute that replaces the old “Right to Know Law” which governs the public's access to government records in New Jersey. The law is compiled in the statutes as N.J.S.A.
