Heritage Farm in Decorah, Iowa is the headquarters of Seed Savers Exchange. Here you'll find our Lillian Goldman Visitors Center and Gift and Garden Store, miles of hiking trails, display gardens and our Historic Orchard. It's also where we host events and house our seed collection.

A dark closet in a cooler part of the house or a dry, cool basement are both good spaces to store seeds for a year or two. Once properly dried, seeds can also be sealed in airtight containers and stored in the refrigerator or freezer for several years. The seeds of some crops are naturally longer lived.

Our Mission. Seed Savers Exchange stewards Americaʼs culturally diverse and endangered garden and food crop legacy for present and future generations. We educate and connect people through collecting, regenerating, and sharing heirloom seeds, plants, and stories.

Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization that is saving "heirloom" (handed-down) garden seeds from extinction, with a focus on heirloom varieties brought to North America by gardeners and farmers when they immigrated, as well as traditional varieties grown by Native Americans, Mennonites and Amish.

Diane Ott Whealy Diane co-founded Seed Savers Exchange with Kent Whealy in 1975. She has been a national leader in the heirloom seed movement and a strong advocate for the protection of the earth's rare genetic food stocks for over 36 years.

Seed Savers Exchange was founded in Missouri in 1975 by Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy. Diane's grandfather entrusted to them the seeds of two garden plants, 'Grandpa Ott's' morning glory and 'German Pink' tomato.

Gardeners share homegrown seeds with one another through our Seed Exchange, which is open to members and nonmembers alike. Participants of all ages and from across the world, share seeds on our site, and Seed Savers Exchange offers many varieties from our own extensive collection on the Exchange as well.
