It has 2 electrons in its valence shell, which it loses to form a calcium ion with a charge of +2. It is +2 because it now has two more positively charged protons than electrons. (Calcium atoms lose electrons to form the same electron configuration as the nearest noble gas (become more stable)).

Calcium has a 2+ charge, and oxygen has a 2− charge. A Lewis dot diagram should contain one calcium atom and one oxygen atom to show how these atoms form an ionic bond.

Calcium ion (Ca2+) is one of the most ubiquitous intracellular second messengers. Changes in the concentration of Ca2+ control a variety of cellular processes including fertilization, proliferation, differentiation, muscle contraction, neuronal signaling, and even programmed cell death.

That +2 charge is a result of calcium having 2 valence electrons that get donated to another ion to make a compound. When the calcium donates its electrons, it becomes electron-deficient and has 2 more protons than electrons. This positively charged calcium ion is known as a cation.

If an ion has a 2+ charge then it must have lost electrons to form the cation. If the ion has 18 electrons and the atom lost 2 to form the ion, then the neutral atom contained 20 electrons. Since it was neutral, it must also have had 20 protons. Therefore the element is calcium.

The calcium ion is also known as Ca2+, meaning it has two less electrons than protons and is not stable in nature. As a pure element, it's a grey metal.

A calcium atom (Ca) has 20 protons and 20 electrons. The atom has no charge. A calcium ion (Ca+2) has lost 2 electrons and has a plus 2 charge.

(The calcium ion has a 2+ charge and the phosphate ion has a 3- charge. To have the positive and the negative be equal, 3 calcium ions are needed and 2 phosphate ions are needed.
