Backflow is the reverse flow of water or other substances into the treated drinking water distribution system. There are two types of backflow: (1) backpressure and (2) backsiphonage. Backpressure happens when the pressure of the contaminant source exceeds the positive pressure in the water distribution main.

Cloudy or Discolored Water Your backflow preventer could be in perfect working order, but if your neighbor's backflow preventer fails, they could be letting fertilizer, soap, stagnant water, and much more into your public water supply.

Backflow occurs when fluid flows in the opposite to the intended or normal direction of flow. There are two types of backflow, back pressure and back siphonage.

Backflow is a plumbing term that refers to the pollution of a clean water line by contaminated water flowing in the reverse direction. Backflow occurs in cross-connections, such as in dishwashers and reverse osmosis systems, between potable and non-potable water lines and results in water that is unsafe to consume.

Backflow is caused by cross-connections that have the potential of allowing contaminants into the drinking water system. Back siphonage can occur when the pressure in a tank or water trough is lower than the water system's pressure. This could allow the influx, or pulling, of contaminated water into the system.

Backflow refers to the reverse flow of non-potable water, or other substances, through a cross-connection and into the piping of a public water system or customer's potable water system. Two types of backflow are backpressure backflow and back-siphonage.

Backflow – is the undesired reverse flow of contaminants into the potable water from an “end-use” hazard and is typically driven by common, but unfavorable, hydraulic events in either the public or a private water distribution system.

Backflow prevention systems are devices installed onto a pipe that only allow water to flow in one direction. Think of it as a one-way gate that allows water from the city's public water supply to flow into your home's piping but stops water if and when it ever tries to flow backwards into the main water supply.
