The assault weapons ban, officially called the Protect Illinois Communities Act, passed after a mass shooting at the 2022 Fourth of July parade in suburban Highland Park. The law banned the sale of AR-15s and scores of other guns beginning in mid-January 2023.

Illinois residents cannot lawfully purchase an AR 15 or assault weapon after January 11, 2023, unless subject to one of the narrow exemptions listed in section 720 ILCS 5/24-1.9(e) within the link above.

Federal challenges to Illinois' so-called assault weapons ban on Second Amendment grounds are underway, and many observers protect the U.S. Supreme Court may eventually make the final call.

However, the act does include exceptions for law enforcement, private security, prison guards, and active military personnel. Illinois citizens not exempt from the ban must register their owned firearms from the list with the state police before the January 1, 2024, deadline.

The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) asked the Supreme Court on Monday to review an Illinois assault weapons ban that a federal appeals court upheld last year. The 7th Circuit found in November that the assault weapons ban constitutes a reasonable limit on the Second Amendment, which the NAGR challenges.

It is now illegal to sell or manufacture high-powered rifles like the AR-15 or AK-47 in Illinois. Those who already own assault weapons in the state can keep them, but they're required to register them.
