A housing co-op provides housing to its members Most housing co-ops in BC are non-profit co-ops with a rental (not equity) model of housing. The members are typically people who want to live in a mixed-income community where they have a voice and a vote in decisions affecting their housing.

Applicants need to define their rules correctly. At least 3 directors are required. At least one director must be a B.C. resident. The majority of directors must be residents of Canada. The first directors of the co-op must be appointed in writing by a majority of the subscribers.

Cooperative housing (commonly described by referring to an individual co-op) is a type of homeownership common to apartment buildings in big cities such as New York. For practical intents and purposes, a co-op can be defined as a building that is jointly owned by a corporation made up of all its inhabitants.

For more information on the requirements of individual co-ops, visit the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC website at .chf.bc.ca. To apply for co-ops, contact the individual co-op directly. Many co-ops accept applications through email as well as by mail.

A co-op member must own at least one common share in the association and live in one of the co-op housing units. Normally, a member must be at least 19 years old (although a co-op may allow members as young as 16).
