The ratio measurement of vision describes visual acuity, or the sharpness of vision, at 20 feet from an object. For example, having 20/70 vision means that you must be at 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 70 feet.

A visual acuity measurement of 20/70 means that a person with 20/70 vision who is 20 feet from an eye chart sees what a person with unimpaired (or 20/20) vision can see from 70 feet away.

If you have a higher Snellen rating than 20/70 both with or without contacts or glasses, you have fairly good eye sight comparatively and you are not legally blind or even legally low vision.

20/70 to 20/160, this is considered moderate visual impairment, or moderate low vision. 20/200 or worse, this is considered severe visual impairment, or severe low vision. 20/500 to 20/1000, this is considered profound visual impairment or profound low vision.

Visual acuity less than 20/200 is considered legally blind, but to actually fit the definition, the person must not be able to attain 20/200 vision even with prescription eyewear.

20/20 is considered normal vision; while 20/50 prohibits driving in Texas without special aids, 20/70 is called a visual handicap, and when a person sees 20/200 or worse in his or her better eye with the best possible correction on that eye, that person is considered to be "legally blind."
