Treatment: Herpes gladiatorum is usually treated with an oral antiviral medication such as or acylovir for 10-14 days. When a wrestler contracts this virus, they are contagious and susceptible to future outbreaks. If a second outbreak occurs, skin lesions are usually smaller.

Most cases are minor and an over the counter topical antifungal medication will take care of it. More serious is impetigo, which is a honey-crusted, weepy lesion anywhere on the body. This one is highly contagious and a doctor must be seen for a prescription topical ointment or antibiotic.

Wrestler's rash is a skin infection spread by skin-to-skin contact of a herpes virus. Symptoms can include painful blisters, fever, sore throat, and headache. Athletes who participate in hand-to-hand sports (wrestling, rugby) are more likely to get infected. Maintaining good hygiene can prevent infection.

Impetigo is yet another common infection found in wrestlers. It is a highly contagious bacterial infection obtained through broken skin such as cuts and scraps.

They look like a fluid-filled sac on a red spot of skin (but when burst they look crusty). The first time a wrestler gets it, it will be quite painful and they may also have fevers and body aches like the flu. If diagnosed, the doctor will prescribe medicine to help improve the symptoms.

Treatments include topical antifungal creams or oral antifungal medication. Treatment should be applied twice daily for 1-4 weeks. Athletes may return to competition after 3 days of topical treatment use2. Lesions should be covered during practice and competition and all equipment and towels should be washed daily.

Tinea infections, more commonly known as Ringworm, are the most common skin infections transmitted through wrestling. It is caused by parasitic fungi that survive on keratin, an organic material that is found in skin, hair, and nails.

Folliculitis, Furuncles, Carbuncles Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles that appears in areas of high friction and perspiration and is caused by a bacteria (most commonly Staphylococcus aureus). Furuncles (boils) and carbuncles (larger boils) are complications of this infection.
