What is the definition of activity analysis in occupational therapy?

Activity Analysis is the process of breaking down an activity into steps and detailed subparts and examining its components. With each activity being evaluated carefully to determine its therapeutic potential (Creek 2003 cited in Creek and Bullock 2008).

The first step to activity analysis is to determine what it is that you will be analyzing.

The general factors for an activity analysis are: activity name and description. supplies and space needed with any noted special considerations. any preparation work that is needed. determine the relationship the activity has with a major life occupation and/or role. age and gender appropriateness.

The activity analysis identifies the physical and temporal needs for the activity, the required client factor and performance skill needs for the activity, and the therapeutic benefit of the activity.

As discussed in Chapter 1, there are two types of activity analysis: activity analysis and occupation-based activity analy- sis. The first type, activity analysis, involves analyzing an activity as it is typically done, without a particular person in mind.

Activity analysis also includes any potential for adapting the activity in order to allow for change in the client. This is called 'grading'. Grading allows the client to progress from exploration, through acquisition of skills, to attainment of goals.

Overall, each analysis should touch on the various activity components, any areas of occupation, client factors, activity demands, performance skills and patterns, and contexts and environments.

Activity Analysis (AA) can be used to document anything that a person does while performing a task. There are two purposes for AA: to determine the activities that occur in any situation, and how often the activities are performed.
