Property Tax and Appraisals The Texas Tax Code, Section 33.06, allows taxpayers 65 years of age or older to defer their property taxes until their estates are settled after death.

Own the property in the year in which you apply. Occupy the property as your primary residence in the year in which you apply. Provide a letter from the the Social Security Administration stating the date at which you became disabled. Provide a copy of the your driver's license or state identification card.

The Tax Code allows a chief appraiser to approve the following late exemption applications, which may result in a refund: residence homesteads (Tax Code Section 11.431); veteran's organization exemption (Tax Code Section 11.438); and. disabled veteran's exemption (Tax Code Section 11.439).

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION Attach a copy of property owner's driver's license or state-issued personal identification certificate. The address listed on the driver's license or state-issued personal identification certificate must correspond to the property address for which the exemption is requested.

Applying is free and only needs to be filed once. The application can be found on your appraisal district website or using Texas Comptroller Form 50-114. If you turn 65 or become disabled, you need to submit another application to obtain the extra exemption using the same Form 50-114.

As of May 22, 2022, the Texas residential homestead exemption entitles the homeowner to a $40,000 reduction in value for school tax purposes. Counties, cities, and special taxing districts may offer homestead exemptions up to 20% of the total value. Most counties in North Texas do offer this 20% reduction.
