Keep open fires 25 feet away from structures or combustible materials. Fires contained in an improved barbecue pits or portable outdoor fireplace require a minimum of 15 feet of clearance. LP or natural gas fire pits or grills require 10 feet of clearance. Have a method of extinguishment readily available.

DAQ rules governing open burning can be found in the Utah Administrative Code (UAC) R307-202. This rule allows open burning of clippings, bushes, plants, and prunings from trees incident to property and residential clean-up activities, once certain conditions have been met. Burning or discarding materials containing nails, screws, or other metal hardware (such as from wood pallets and construction debris) is prohibited. 4. A person may collect downed wood or woody vegetation for fires on trust lands but may not cut standing vegetation (living or dead).

Recreational fires will have a method of sufficient extinguishment readily available at all times. Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material. Conditions that could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.
