The big news coming for 2018, stemming from the tax reform bill passed in December, 2017, is the elimination of the standard $4,050 personal tax exemption, while the standard tax deduction doubles in the 2018 tax year. Personal tax exemptions are changing as well, as you'll see below.

A personal exemption is an amount of money that you could deduct for yourself, and for each of your dependents, on your tax return. The personal exemption, which was $4,050 for 2017, was the same for all tax filers. Unlike with deductions, the amount of exemptions you can claim does not depend on your expenses.

Certain groups of people who meet specific criteria don't have to pay income taxes. For example, if you're single, under the age of 65, and your yearly income is less than $12,000, or married, under 65, with income less than $24,000, you're exempt from paying taxes. ... (These figures are for 2019 or the 2018 tax year.)

Most of us want to lower our taxes, and if you're eligible for certain tax exemptions, then you could reduce the amount you have to pay the IRS. A tax exemption is an amount of money you're allowed to subtract from your taxable income. The more exemptions you're able to take, the more you can lower your tax bill.

For example, in 2019 the annual basis is $4,200, while in 2018 the annual basis was $4,150. To figure the size of a withholding allowance, divide the basis by the number of pay periods. If you are paid weekly in 2019, divide $4,200 by 52 for a withholding allowance of $80.77.

Interest expense: Homeowners can deduct interest expenses on up to $750,000 of mortgage debt from their income taxes, though when they itemize these deductions, they forgo the standard deduction of $12,000 for individuals or married couples filing individually, $18,000 for head of household & $24,000 for married filing ...

The Mortgage Interest Deduction allows homeowners to reduce their taxable income by the amount of interest paid on a qualified residence loan. The law regarding the Mortgage Interest Deduction has been revised by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and the changes will take effect beginning with returns filed in 2019.

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction rises to $12,200 for 2019, up $200, and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $18,350 for tax year 2019, up $350.

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction rises to $12,200 for 2019, up $200, and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $18,350 for tax year 2019, up $350.

For 2018, the standard deduction amount for an individual who may be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer cannot exceed the greater of $1,050 or the sum of $350 and the individual's earned income.
