The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires your employer to withhold federal, Social Security and Medicare taxes from your wages. If you don't see federal income taxes deducted from your paycheck, your filing status, exemptions or allowances may be the reason.

2018-2019 Tax Brackets and Federal Income Tax Rates. The new tax rules retain seven federal income tax brackets, but tax rates and thresholds have changed. There are seven federal tax brackets for 2019: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. The bracket depends on taxable income and filing status.

Withholding is the portion of an employee's wages that is not included in his or her paycheck but is instead remitted directly to the federal, state, or local tax authorities. Withholding reduces the amount of tax employees must pay when they submit their annual tax returns.

Percentage method You must multiply the amount of one withholding allowance (explained below) by the number of allowances the employee claims and subtract that from the employee's wages. Then, you must find the range for that number and calculate the tax amount.

The tax rate for new employers is to be 3.4 percent for 2019, down from 3.6 percent for 2018.
