NFPA 101-3.3. 91 Fire Watch. The assignment of a person or persons to an area for the express purpose of notifying the fire department, the building occupants, or both of an emergency; preventing a fire from occurring; extinguishing small fires; or protecting the public from fire or life safety dangers.

A fire watch is the person or persons responsible for continuously observing hot work activity for the detection of, and response to, fires during hot work operations. A fire watch has the authority to stop work if necessary and conduct essential steps for restoring safe conditions within the hot work area.

Fire tower jobs peaked in the U.S. during the Great Depression, and at this point, the job has mostly been replaced with aircraft and other tech solutions. There are just a few hundred seasonal forest fire watch jobs left in the country.

When is a fire watch required? OSHA requires employers to post a fire watch during hot work if any of the following conditions are present (1915.504(b)): 1. Slag, weld splatter, or sparks which might pass through an opening and cause a fire.

The Fire Watch Shall: Continually patrol the area, structure or facility and document the patrol. Be trained in the use of a fire extinguisher and have one accessible at all times. Be capable of communicating with building occupants and the fire department to notify them about fires or other emergencies.

Conduct a continuous patrol of all designated areas at least once every 30 minutes. Look for observable signs of smoke, fire and hazardous conditions. Enter all stairwells - open doors and look into each stairwell. Enter all common areas including basements, lounges, laundry rooms, and dining areas.
