Under the updated child and adult meal patterns, meals served will include a greater variety of vegetables and fruit, more whole grains, and less added sugar and saturated fat.

The CACFP Meal Time Policy states that the start of a major meal must be at least 3 hours after the beginning of the previous major meal when no snack is served. If a snack is served between major meals, then there must be at least 2 hours between the snack and the major meal.

As the MyPlate icon shows, the five food groups are Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein Foods, and Dairy. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasizes the importance of an overall healthy eating pattern with all five groups as key building blocks, plus oils.

The CACFP guides you on how to provide healthy meals using five food components which make up the meal service requirements: grains, fruits, vegetables, meats/meat alternates and milk. Learn when these are required and how they fit into the CACFP meal pattern.

The food industry encompasses all aspects of food production: manufacturing, distribution, marketing, retail, regulation, and consumption.

There are five components to the CACFP: Child Care, Adult Day Care, Emergency Shelter, At-risk Afterschool Meals, and Day Care Homes. Organizations may be able to participate in the CACFP under one of these components if they meet eligibility requirements.

These include sodium, solid fats (major sources of saturated and trans fatty acids), added sugars, and refined grains. These food components are consumed in excess by children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. In addition, the diets of most men exceed the recommendation for cholesterol.

Grain Based Desserts: Grain based desserts are no longer creditable in the CACFP. Graham and animal crackers are designated as “Sweet Crackers” under Exhibit A and are still creditable.
